South Africa’s most African province, Kwazulu Natal, has all this continent is famous for by the tourist. Wildlife, culture, pristine beaches and the towering, covered in mist, peaks of the Drakensberg range.

The N2 coming from Mpumalanga follows the subtropical coastline all the way south to the Eastern Cape. In the centre lies Durban, South Africa’s major harbour. It is a mixture of cultural flavours, derived from Zulu, Indian, Arabic and white communities, one of the few cities in South Africa worth a visit in its own right.

In the north , Maputaland, a patchwork of wetlands, wilderness, Zulu villages and freshwater lakes, meets the sea in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (previously known as Greater St. Lucia Wetlands Park), one of South Africa’s World Heritage sites. The tropic vegetation, clear waters and coral reefs make Sodwana Bay the best spot for the tourist who wants to snorkel and scuba dive.

The marine life is matched on land by the Kwazulu Natal game reserves, the best places in South Africa to see both white and black rhino. The largest and most famous is Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve , the park is home to Africa's Big Five Game: Elephant, Rhinoceros (Black and White/Wide), Cape Buffalo, Lion and Leopard. The smaller Mkuzi and Ndumo game reserves are famous for the number of birds that can be spotted.

The interior of the province consists largely of rolling hills from the Valley of a Thousand Hills to the Midlands. This area marks the Kwazulu Natal Battlefields, the heartland of the Zulu kingdom saw battles between the Zulu’s, the Boers and the English. Today, the tourist can explore the area through Battlefield tours, a memorable way of taking in South Africa’s turbulent history.

South of the Tugela River you will find the most English area of South Africa. The Midlands green sugar estates, polo clubs and crafts and arts route make your travel extremely pretty. Following the N3 to the west, the Midlands high peaks sweep west into the Drakensberg range.

There is a chain of KZN wildlife reserves, the accommodation offered varies from basic rest camps to up-market lodges. They are ideal bases for exploring the Drakensberg Mountains. Crystal clear lakes and rivers, giant peaks and waterfalls form the scenery while walking, mountaineering or hiking.

In the southern Drakensberg there is a ski resort called Tiffindell which is open from late May to Early September. Tiffindell may receive as much as 2.5 metres of snow during good skiing years.
